In 1919, Alfred Heimer, Buffalo Bill Cody's chef for his Wild West Show, decided to settle in Billings and build a restaurant and bar on Montana Avenue across from the train station. With financial help from Cody, Heimer built The Rex Hotel. Originally two stories , the Rex was one of the best places to stay in town and the "Buffalo Bill Bar" was the premier meeting place. Advertising claimed, "Cold beer and good German lunches." In 1917, a third floor was added to the Hotel and business continued to flourish. For a time, the Rex was frequented by the colorful likes of Will James, Calamity Jane and Buffalo Bill. During Prohibition, the bar was moved from room to room in the hotel even though the Billings' constabulary were some of its best customers. During the 30's, 40's & 50's the Rex and Montana Avenue prospered. But with the decline of the railroads, business suffered. In 1975, the Rex was bought by Senia Hart, just one day before the wrecking ball was to tear it down. It was subsequently sold to A & E Architects in Billings, whose remodel won an award for Renovation of a Historic Building. By this time, a bar and restaurant inhabited the first floor with offices on the second and third floors. In 1983, The Rex Hotel Partnership purchased the business and building and remodeled the first floor into its present form. We would love to welcome you to the Rex where the beer is still cold -- just as it was in 1910. And just as Alfred would have wanted it. In keeping with the Rex tradition, we strive to provide you with the highest quality food, drink and service. We are delighted you visiting our website and hope to see you in the Rex soon.
