Shape Up Montana Starts Feb 1

Updated: January 22, 2013

Shape Up Montana

Shape Up Montana is a fun, interactive three-month team competition from February 1 -- May 1 that encourages Montanans to develop healthy physical activity and eating habits. The Shape Up Montana program is based around accumulated activity or weight loss divisions.

The program is a team effort. Teams are made up of friends, family members, co-workers, and more to compete against each other in a state-wide competition. In the spirit of the Big Sky State Games, the members of the team with the most activity logged or weight lost in their category are awarded gold medals and receive a special award. Other prizes will be awarded throughout the competition for the teams with the most participation, weekly challenge participation, and monthly reporting. Everyone is a winner by taking part in the program and being more active.

The team captain is responsible for registering their team through the Shape Up Montana website. On completion, team members are emailed a link to setup their user profile on the Shape Up Montana website. Team members login into the website to calculate and log their weight loss or activity which is converted to "activity miles." To keep the competition fair, the winning teams have the highest average monthly accumulated activity or highest percentage of weight loss.
Weekly Motivation

During each of the 12 weeks of the program, team members receive emails with activity and nutrition articles along with healthy recipes to try. This allows participants to make small, realistic lifestyle changes.
Program of Big Sky State Games

Sounds great, let's get started!

Since 1990 Montana has steadily increased in obesity among adults and children. In 1990 Montana's adult population was less than 10% obese, in 1999 we were at 14.7%, in 2010 we hit 23.5%. The Big Sky State Games understands that these are trends we need to change. That's why we are encouraging all Montanans' to embrace the Shape Up Montana program.
